I Do My Own Stunts

Today was a day of firsts. Today I bought my first hip-hop album (note* yes I bought K-Os, but K-Os is completely trans-genre, and doesn’t really count as true hip-hop. K-Os is a member of the completely awesome genre). Today I purchased, from a brick and mortar HMV store, Mood Ruff – I Do My Own Stunts. I will admit that I bought this album based on a limited criteria list: 1) I heard a stellar single on CBC radio 3 (a fantastic resource for indie Canadian music), and 2) it was $15.

The ‘song of the summer’ from this album is fully, and completely track 4 Rocketship. This track drips and bleeds solid beat, ridiculous hooks, and catchy lyrics. I’m still getting into this album, but thus far I’m impressed (however my hip-hop experience is limited). I blame society, and grade 7. In grade 7 I refused to listen to any music beside metal and 60-70′s rock (The Doors, Iron Maiden, Metallica et al.). Why? Because it was cool, and all other music was not. It didn’t matter if my toe got to tapping, I wasn’t going to like it. I would make that toe stop tapping, throw on my black, band screened t-shirt, my plaid shirt, and march off to school with my Panasonic walkman blaring.

I know I miss great music from time to time, but I’m not too worried, cause I’m sure even those that pay attention miss great music miss out as well. I often wonder how many great songs are out there, already written, recorded, and discarded. Who knows, the next big hit may have already been retired to the bargain bin.

Who knows, I may stumble upon it tomorrow.

On The Waterfront

A long 4 days of work in 30+ degree weather earned me a Sunday night of movie watching. I haven’t rented a film in many, many months, and it was great to do so again. The selections were two classics: ‘On The Waterfront‘ and ‘Annie Hall‘. Annie Hall is tonight’s project, while On The Waterfront was viewed last night.

What a terrific helping of story, acting, and defining roles. Marlon Brando truly does break out in the lead role of Terry Malloy. The line he walks between brute, and kind understanding human being is a pleasure to watch. The nuances delivered in the films defining scene let us all feel the bittersweet sadness Terry feels towards his brother, whom should have looked out for him better.

“You don’t understand. I coulda had class. I coulda been a contender. I coulda been somebody…. instead of a bum, which is what I am, let’s face it.”

New Digs?

I have been infrequent in the past little while with posts. I can account for this with two reasons a) I’ve been working like an animal b) I’ve been working on a new blog location using wordpress. It’s coming along, and I’m currently just tinkering with how I’m going to upload/display pictures, final name/domain name, and final layout. I like the layout but it falls apart (looks dumb) when I start putting photos in it. So, have no fear, I will be pumping out posts again. (well, except for the fact that I’m starting a new job tomorrow, and as the promotion has already began, and there is lots of administrative stuff that needs to be taken care of first. Other then that time consuming, and exciting set of events, I’ll be posting).

Raise More Than Your Glass

10 weeks, 6 provinces, 88 finalists, 1 winner. It was a whirlwind adventure that has finally come to a close. It was quite an experience working the Labatt Blue Chip Poker Tour, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. I have been to my share of bars, and even worked in one for close to 4 years, and in that time I have never witnessed — let alone been part off — such a huge logistical, and crowd pleasing event. Oh, and I got a tux out of it to boot.

The final was held June 16th at the Liberty Grand in Toronto, on the CNE grounds. This event is why beer companies are great, because they know how to throw a party. Continue reading ‘Raise More Than Your Glass’
