Am I the only one that thinks this could be a huge issue? Video game nerd alert. It seems the Red Cross Society has the copyright to of all things — the red cross. Any use of this symbol in video games violates their copyright as well as Chapter VII: Articles 38-44 of the Geneva Convention of August 12, 1949. Here is a link to a pdf document of a letter from The Red Cross to what I assume is a game development company in Vancouver, Canada. Has anyone played a game where they didn’t pick up a little pack with a red cross on it to replenish their health?

This has to be one of the all time ultimate fan events devised by a band. Dave Matthews is taking two cruise ships from Florida to Nassau for the weekend, and turning them into a floating musical circus. A lot of artists will be performing on the ships (Mike Doughty, G. Love) with a final show featuring Dave on a private island. The cost? $1199-2399 per person for the weekend voyage. The date for this experience is February 3 – 6, and there are still cabins available on the ship departing from Port Canaveral in Orlando.

I first heard about this film some time ago from Rooney. Doing some IMDb searching tonight on a different topic I stumbled across it again. It seems the release date is tentatively set for July 7, 2006. The film utilizes an animation technique called interpolated rotoscoping that Linklater first used used in another film Waking Life. The plot as listed on Warner Independent Pictures reads: “A Scanner Darkly” is set in suburban Orange County, California in a future where America has lost the war on drugs. When one reluctant undercover cop (Reeves) is ordered to start spying on his friends, he is launched on a paranoid journey into the absurd, where identities and loyalties are impossible to decode. It is a cautionary tale of drug use based on the novel by Philip K. Dick and his own experiences. “A Scanner Darkly” stars Keanu Reeves, Robert Downey Jr., Woody Harrelson, Winona Ryder and Rory Cochrane and is written for the screen and directed by Richard Linklater.
It’s definitely a compelling cast, and a visually interesting film style. View the trailer at Apple.
A friend won tickets to the Edge Next Big Thing show tonight featuring mobile. Tickets said 7pm doors, so obviously we got their at 9pm. Not for lack of trying mind you, it’s just impossible to find parking on College St. So, mobile. What can I say, they play fine radio rock. With a front man that reminds me of the new INXS singer doing his best imitation of Bono behind the mic (and inbetween song banter) The show felt familar. Yet high energy, polished, solid vocals backed by driving guitars, and a mean drum beat — combined with the most multi-coloured lights this side of a Britney concert — always makes for a good show. But that’s all it was; a good show. It wasn’t earth shattering, it wasn’t mind blowing.
It was typical.
Google has added another zoom level in their satelite images for select regions around the globe. Check out Buckingham Palace in London, the Statue of Liberty in New York, as well as the Sydney Opera House.[via googleblog]
Ran across Copyscape a service that will search the web for sites that have plagiarized your content. Obviously I had to give it a try, and low and behold I actually got one hit — one solitary hit. It seems someone took one of my Peru posts, and placed it on a travel-info site. I did get credit for it, but was not informed of the action.
Today is link day, and I have a few pretty funny and informative videos you should check out. Some of these are from digg.com, while others are not.
- A university lecture hall gets hacked, as someone sycronizes the chalkboards to music.
- We all know google is an amazing place to work. This video from ABC is a 7min walk around mini interview piece. They pick some pretty funny people to talk to, and we see why tstock is $460 — free everything.
- Do you have some spare lava laying around? Why not cook with it. Note: it is illegal to cook with lava in Hawaii.
On Global News tonight they ran a piece on the imminent release in Canada of Karla. It contained the typical outrage that has plagued this films release in Canada from day one. My question is this: what makes us so much better than everyone else? Why do we get to be self-righteous when it comes to a film depicting one of Canada’s worst citizens? Hollywood has been making films about sadistic real-life murders, and authors have been writing about sadistic real-life murders since the written word was created (anyone seen Springtime For Hitler?). I was pleased to see that the makers of the movie even included a summary of other films based on true events. The events were horrible, but we shouldn’t sweep them under the rug.
It’s a film.
