This may be old news but I was reading an article in the Daily Mail that Princess Eugeine is on Myspace. This wasn’t all that interesting, as she is a 17 year old girl — why shouldn’t she be on Myspace (and Facebook). What was somewhat interesting was to see that HM Queen Elizabeth II was on Myspace, along with many other members of the Royal Family. I understand that the monarchy is trying to modernize, but Myspace feels to ‘cheap’ to be used by the Queen of England.

A lizard, green, balances on some branches at the Symbio Wildlife Gardens. Catch more photos at flickr. Helensburg, New South Wales, Australia.
With the skywalk finally opening at the Grand Canyon, I think I may add it to my list of places to go. I think it would be rather interesting to walk on a glass floor suspended 4,000 ft (1219m) above the floor of the canyon. View some photos here.
More money means more teachers. More teachers means more job opportunities when I graduate. I like this news. I’m also interested to see if Ontario classrooms are able to reach the 20 students per class expectation by September 2008, because that would be great. [source Globe and Mail]
Joel Plaskett and his Emergency blew the roof off the Heritage Hotel last week. Great Canadian rock and roll is always appreciated down under. No maraca was left unscathed. Bulli, New South Wales, Australia.
The New York Times recently ran an article that follows a young women who decided to pay the few hundred dollars it cost to get genetically tested for Huntington’s disease. Her grandfather developed the disease which means that she could also be a carrier of the affected gene. I think I fall into the camp of wanting to know my own fate. (Facing Life With a Lethal Gene)
I try to keep my photos off Facebook because of the low resolution they support, but there is something to be said for the community Facebook has created, and the importance that photos can play. Having said that an iPhoto export function has been released that integrates with Facebook. No more going to Facebook to upload photos, do it right from iPhoto. (Facebook Exporter for iPhoto)
With my ever growing collection of digital data I grow ever more weary of losing it to a system failure. This was not an issue when I was on my PC as a number of online services provided backup services. I went with Carbonite as they provided the most storage space for the best price AND they turned out to be reliable with great customer service. Sadly when I moved to a Mac I had no cost effective solutions. Carbonite assured me they were working on a Mac Client but I have yet to receive any info on this despite being on their email list.
Yesterday an answer came, and it came from another service I had provided my email address to. Mozy. Mozy provides 2GB of free backup and they have just released a Beta Mac client. I happily loaded this onto my machine and backed up my most recent scholastic documents. It worked slick and flawlessly. They provide some interesting options for backing up data: you can do it by directory or file type. This way it will find all your documents, or photos, or music and make a secure online copy. What Mozy offers that Carbonite didn’t is access to my files from any internet connection — which I can see being helpful if I neglect to email my self a copy.
All in all it seems to be working well thus far. Unfortunately I do not have sufficient bandwidth in Australia to make use of a full system backup so I’ll be going with the free 2gb of storage for now. Sorry Carbonite, you were a leader initially, but your current lack of Mac compatibility and web access to my files is unacceptable.
Zooomr, the photo sharing website, will allow members to sell their photos. Zooomr will retain 10% of the proceeds, with the rest going to the owner. I wonder how profitable this would be for the average photographer. With all my images tied to Flickr I don’t know if the few dollars (?) I could make every year is worth the trouble. But a few dollars a year over a life adds up. With free storage and unlimited file size this could be a big threat to Flickr.
While I was away in Gilgandra for 10 days we made a day trip to the Warrambungles National Park. While there I was able to try and get up close and personal with some wild Kangaroos.
