Rogers and Fido have announced a new cellular plan that allows you to make wifi calls from your home wireless network. For this privilege you will be asked to pay $15 a month for unlimited local calls, or $20 a month for unlimited anywhere in Canada calls. That doesn’t really sound like a deal when most current cell phone plans already provide free evening and weekends. Digital Home Canada has an interesting article titled ‘Fido’s Uno: An expensive VoIP and Wireless calling plan‘, where they break down the cost of this new service. As you can tell from the title they aren’t impressed.
I’m going to add one assumption about the service: I’m pretty sure there won’t be an automatic hand off of calls from wifi to the cellular network (or vice versa), thus if you are on a wifi call and leave your wifi zone the call will be dropped, and you will have to call the person back. Don’t you just love being asked to pay more for less?
