My new calculator is the Sharp EL-520W

I just picked up a new scientific calculator for $15, and boy is it loaded. I went with the 520W over the 531W because I wanted the solar power source. The 531W has:

272 functions, which include power/root/logarithm functions, trigonometry functions, factorials, random functions, fractions, angle unit conversion, polar/cartesian coordinate conversion, binary/pental/octal/hexadecimal calculations (includes logical ops), 1-2 variable statistics with 6 regression models (linear, logarithmic, exponential, power, inverse, quadratic). Calculations are done in 14 digits internally.

The 520W adds:

52 physical constants, 44 unit conversions, complex number calculation, 2-3 variable linear equation solver, quadratic/cubic equation solver, Newton generic equation solver, numeric derivative/integral functions, formula memory (max 4 formulae, 256 characters total), and algebraic substitution (simulation calculation) for a total of 472 functions.

472 functions? That is completely ridiculous. Sure some of those ‘functions’ are stored constants but none the less there is a lot going on, and all for $15. I’m pretty impressed. It does all the things I need it to do, and it lets me do them pretty easily. I bought my last calculator circa 1995 so I guess even these little computers can change in 13 years — but surprisingly not that much. Ain’t she a beauty?

Yes, she is a beauty – doesn’t it just make you wish you could strap that puppy to your wrist and walk around calculating ALL DAY LONG?

It’s like you have been watching me on closed circuit TV.

I have the same and found this page trying to figure out the quadratic solver on my calc

The one flaw I’ve found is that the ‘pi’ button is the same as 3; it is non-obvious if you mispress the 2nd button

I have a Sharp EL-520W and have a question. I need to know if it has the functionality to reverse or swap two numeric values.

For example, if I have a result and I want to divide it into a number, I want to be able to finish entering the calculation with the other number and then just swap the two to get the answer and avoid entering the numbers twice.

For example: 678.7538 / 12 when I really want 12 / 678.7538 all I would do (or want to do) is press the swap button and the numbers are swapped, giving the correct numerator and denominator. Does that make sense?

It’s a useful function that I’ve had on other calculators…really. Does anyone know if the EL-520W has that functioanlity? Sometimes it’s indictaed with a diuble sided arrow with an x and a y or simply the word “swap”. The Casio fx-260 has the swap function it looks like:
X Y. My HP 20s had the word SWAP on the button. The problem is that for my program I HAVE to use the EL-520W.

    Thanks

You really need a 1/x button. Instead you can simply enter [1] followed by [divide] followed by [ALPHA] [=].

In effect, this inverts your previous answer.

  6. 6 question

how do you find the x intercepts using the SHARP el 520 ?

  7. 7 anony

mode 2,2 and then enter in the values of a, b, and c when the equation is in the form ax^2 bx c = 0

Does anybody know how to switch from degrees to radians on this calculator??

  9. 9 RT

To switch to/from Degrees, Radians, and Grads press [2nd F] then [.](DRG).

  10. 10 kush

shift x^2 gives you inverse function.

Where do I find the Inv key before doing the trigonometric functions

    ex .643 INV SIN = 40.0158 = 40Degrees

I can’t find the INV key to get the above answer

  12. 12 Katrina

INV SIN its the same as 2ndF SIN

Is it anybody know how to work with COMPLEX numbers?
I use Mode3 and entering complex numbers but for some reason I can use only rectangular form. Please HELP how to use POLAR FORM?????

  14. 14 Firas

To switch to polar form, press 2ndF and 8.. to switch back to xy, press 2ndF and 9

  15. 15 Facebook

and how do you show the complex part of the answer it shows only the real part when you compute.

  16. 16 how

how do i work mode 2 0 or 2 1 to solve a linear equation?

    HI guys
i would like to know how to find roots of equation like
    S^2 4S 6 =0

if we can or not in this calculator
thank you alot for your help guys
