Will HP be the Envy of the MacBook Air?

Taking a page from the MacBook Air design manual, VoodooPC has created the Envy 133. It looks like Voodoo is a business unit of HP. The laptop looks super sexy and matches/exceeds the Air in a few areas. It runs Windows Vista but can also duel-boot to Linux when you need to get up and running in a hurry. Still a tiny HDD and no optical drive.

What’s the deal with aging?

Some new research out of Stanford University School of Medicine contradicts the prevailing theory that aging is a buildup of tissue damage akin to rust, and implies science might eventually halt or even reverse the ravages of age. Could it just be a matter of turning some genes on and off?

Observations on a train

As I was sitting on the train today I got to thinking, “I do like to use this time for reading books, but man, books are getting bigger and bigger while my bag real estate is getting smaller and smaller.” It occurred to me that I might be interested in buying books that are broken up into parts (in essence two smaller, easier to handle books), but come packaged together. It would be akin to flipping an LP to hear side 2. The first drawback that occurred to me was that if you finish one of the parts while on the train you’d be left with nothing to read, but I think that is a small problem.

It was good while it lasted

My heart sank today when I reached into my bag for my calculator. All I grasped was empty air. I’m not a person who tends to loose things, and the last calculator I owned lasted me till the end of University — some 9 years of constant use. This one lasted a little more than a month. I suppose it could have fallen out of my bag if I accidentally put it in a pouch instead of a pocket last Friday, but I’m not placing my bets there. I’ll probably end up buying the same calculator (Sharp EL-520W) again, as I liked it and it was a real bargain.

Oh, and I’m probably going to carve my name in the back — you know, just in case I have to claim ownership.

Update: It seems my calculator accidentally made it into someones bag. They said they have a habit of accidentally keeping things they borrow because they forget they borrowed it.

John McCain states the obvious

Reuters is reporting that John McCain is saying that, “Obama’s Europe trip amounts to politics”. And how is that a problem? Correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t he engaged in a political campaign for the Presidency of the United States? I sure hope his trip is about politics at a time like this. Next time it can be about getting a tasty crêpe.

Make your own maps

Who says you need to depend on Google, Microsoft or MapQuest for all your mapping needs. Get out there and make your own. That is what a group of guys did on the Isle of Man. With some GPS units, bikes and some laptops they set off to create a map of all the streets on the isle.

last.fm better than ever

last.fm has done a bit of cleaning up and revamping, and today has unveiled the new look and features to the world. It looks pretty slick.

last.fm on your iPhone

The recent lack of posting is not because I’ve become busy, it is because I haven’t seen anything interesting to post. I blame the iPhone release for taking over all the news. Alas, I’m giving in to the iPhone, but only because it also involves last.fm. Last.fm has released an iPhone app that allows you to connect to your account and stream music. From the video this looks pretty cool. With this application on your iPhone you can almost get away with not having any music in your iTunes, because you can stream to your hearts content over wifi or 3g. This is an app that will make an all-you-can-eat data plan worthwhile, and make the Canadian 6gb plan useless. It can currently be used in Canada, the US, the UK, France, Germany and Spain.
