Satellite creates best topographic map of the Earth

The most complete topographic maps of the planet earth have been created using instruments aboard the decade-old Terra satellite. The new map covers latitudes between 83° north and 83° south, resolving patches of land as narrow as 30 metres across. The data is available online but I haven’t figured out how to use or view it yet. There are some more images here.

Zack Morris on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon

Word on the street is that Zack Morris from Bayside High (not Mark-Paul Gosselaar) was on Jimmy Fallon last night. Sounds like something I need to check out.

Patti the cow

patti in BW 2

Last week at work there was a fund raiser for the Canadian Cancer Society in the form of Cow Patty Bingo. For those unfamiliar with the game the rules are fairly simple: you buy a square on a grid and hope the cow drops a patty in it. The highlight of the day was probably the fact that I controlled 54 of the available 130 square and did not win. The cow, who’s name happened to be Patti, had it out for me.

Model-Based Photograph Enhancement and Viewing

An impressive bit of technology is being created that takes a photo and combines it with already existing georeferenced digital terrain and urban models. Once this has been done the photo can be cleaned up, relight, and countless other amazing feats. One of the most impressive is the ability to overlay relevant information about objects in your photo i.e. building names, roads, etc. Imagine being able to take a photo with your cellphone and instantly having an overlay that tells you which building is which, along with deep links to other information on the Internet.
